Wendy Johnson was quite exhausted already. She was one of the best cross country runners in the entire state and today was another of her big meets. However, unlike most of her meets, Wendy did not finish first place because the meet had been cancelled halfway through. She was leading the pack when an official stopped her and said the meet had been called off. The clouds were building in rather quickly and a steady rain was beginning to fall. With lightning being reported in the area, the event was cancelled and the girls were allowed to go home. All except Wendy.
Much like most of her meets, Wendy's parents were nowhere to be seen. Granted, getting up early on a Saturday morning to barely see your daughter at all was a pretty low incentive even for the most dedicated of parents. So, much like most of the time, Wendy was dropped off and then would be picked up later by one of her parents.
However, today was rather different as her parents wouldn't be able to pick her up until later that evening. She was about to get a ride with one of her friends, but she was so far ahead of the pack that they had already left without her. So, Wendy was left alone with an ever increasing storm chance moving through the day.
Not getting any answer from any of her texts, Wendy realized that she had to get out of the storm. The rain had already cooled her down and washed away her sweat, but she was now feeling cold as her body temperature slowly began to drop. Looking around the foreign school to her, Wendy looked for some sort of shelter. That is when she noticed a church at the top of the hill. Knowing they would always be open, Wendy slowly began to walk to the shelter.
Even as a little Freshman, Wendy was quite small for her age. Her coaches wondered how she did well at running considering she usually took twice as many strides as the other runners. However, what Wendy lacked in stature, she made up for in energy as she only had one high gear that she ran at. Eventually, all of the opponents were put to dust and she would keep going at her high pace.
After the race, she was quite exhausted and her little legs felt like cement. The rain poured down on her as it soaked her to the bone. With her runners top, black shorts and running shoes, she only carried a little bag that held her cell phone and several smaller items. Finally, she reached her destination and went for the doors. Rubbing the rain from her gentle green eyes, she opened the doors of the church as she was happy to finally be in someplace dry. What was on the other side of the church? She had absolutely no idea.
