Amy Gray was at her wits end.  Looking at the list that she had pulled out of her pocket, she felt like crying.  In fact, she had felt like crying since she started this day.  Amy had moved across the country to start college and the problems had begun to start since she stepped into this town.

After only a few days of living in her new apartment, the Landlord came to her and told her that the apartment had been double booked.  Since the other person had signed the lease first, Amy was out of luck.  She had a week to vacate the premises before she would be forcibly be removed.  Amy had spent most of her money moving her stuff into her apartment and was now quickly running out of spending cash.  The dorms were too expensive, so she needed to find a new apartment and fast.

However, since classes were about to start, the little Freshman was running out of options as all of the complexes were full.  Every single place that she had tried today was completely booked and had no place for her to stay.  The only place she could find was well beyond her price range.

Looking at the place where she was right now, she figured this would be as well.  However, there was hope in the final place on her list as this apartment had the option of a roommate.  Amy had found a posting looking for a roommate and even though Amy would prefer living alone, she was running out of options.

After parking her car and walking up the flight of stairs, Amy reached the designated apartment.  With a deep breath, Amy knocked on the door.

Amy was exactly what you would expect a young freshman college girl to look like.  She was currently wearing an old High School Hoodie, old High School sweatpants and simple sandals on her feet.  She had done nothing to her hair this morning and did not put on a single ounce of makeup.

What Amy lacked in clothing and makeup, she had an abundance of cuteness.  She was rather small for a girl her age, had bright blonde hair and still had an innocence about her.  She was from a small farm town several states away, so she had a wholesome and cute aura about her.  At the moment, that aura was being taken away as she at her wits end at the thought of being homeless.  With a final hope and prayer, Amy desperately wished that this apartment could be her salvation.

Nadia Maki had not been having the best day.

It wasn’t that she didn’t like her apartment. On the contrary, she was quite comfortable in it now, and it was a very nice apartment to get comfortable in. But she had been anticipating sharing it with a friend when she’d gotten it, and while she could cover the rent herself, it was awkward feeling the space meant for two with only her to fill it up.

She’d begun looking for another roommate, but she was beginning to lose hope she was ever going to find someone to take her up on it. Nadia had found over the course of many years she could sometimes intimidate others without meaning to, and for one reason or another, all of her prospective roommates so far had been put off and had not bothered to inquire further after meeting her.

She supposed she could understand their perspective. Her style had its own community, but to the larger community, it was…unconventional. Nadia was a tall, pretty young woman, her hair long, dark, and silky, but people seemed to take exception to her clothing. Nadia was not a girl for sweatpants and jeans; while there were always exceptions, it was an exceedingly rare event to see her wearing anything but the silky, lacy black dresses she loved. Nadia just wasn’t comfortable without her ribbons and frills, and she loved dark colors…unfortunately, this seemed to scare off people that didn’t understand her well. Nadia had been told she looked like an oversized doll by some people; others, less charitable, had told her she looked like a vampire. Nadia did not let such comments get to her. She was proud of  what she liked, and if someone couldn’t deal with that, she didn’t want to live with them anyway. Unfortunately, Nadia didn’t realize that while she strove for an elegant, ladylike and dignified air, that in itself could be intimidating as well.

Still, despite a long string of failures, Nadia stood up quickly as a knock came on the door. Ah, one more prospective roommate…the first she’d had in a while, she’d have to admit. Nadia took a moment to look at herself in the mirror. Her hair hung just as she’d styled it this morning, shiny and smooth. Her makeup, not too light, not too heavy…just right. She adjusted her hat and her skirt slightly to make sure she looked her very best. You didn’t get a second chance at a first impression, after all.

Once that was done, Nadia crossed over quickly, and answered the door. She was rather surprised at who was on the other side; a young girl, rather shorter than Nadia, and dressed like she’d just come from the gym of a high school! Nadia wondered if she was a local student; she was certainly young enough to be going to one of the schools around here, although her height and her looks made it hard for Nadia to gauge her age. She could not have been more different-looking than Nadia…and yet, there was something about her. Nadia recognized cuteness when she saw it, and this girl had it in abundance…the wholesome, innocent air about her was quite familiar to Nadia, although she’d never seen it so clearly in someone who wasn’t wearing pink before. Rather than be discouraged by the girl’s casual clothing and slightly disheveled look, Nadia found she hoped this girl wouldn’t be scared away, and gave her a small, polite smile and a very ladylike curtsey.

“Good afternoon,” she said politely. “My name is Nadia. Are you here about my ad for a roommate? My landlord told me someone would be coming to look at the apartment today.”

Amy really did not know who to expect would answer the door of the new apartment.  She was ready and prepared for anybody to open the door.  It could be a guy and Amy would be totally off base.  It could be some random adult that needed the extra cash.  Or it could just be a student like Amy.  There was a world of possibility behind that door and all Amy could do was hope for the best.

However, if she had a thousand guesses, she would never expect somebody like Nadia to open the door.  Amy had never seen a Lolita before, so her dress threw her for a complete loop.  She had a simple and almost innocent small town view of the world, so a Lolita was completely foreign to her.

Amy took it all in stride.  Nadia looked like a Goth that she used to see in High School, but she didn't seem scary at all.  By now, Amy was desperate, so she couldn't be picky about her choices.  They obviously had nothing in common, but Amy would be more than happy to have a roof over her head.  She paused for a while as she took Nadia's appearance in as she didn't know how to respond.  However, she seemed nice and did not look like a creep at all.  Amy would feel secure that Nadia would do nothing horrible to her if she was allowed to room with her.  Before the moment became too awkward, Amy took a deep breath and desperately tried to look past the strange sight before her.  After arching an eyebrow at her curtsey, Amy shook her head and extended her arm.

"Yes, that's me.  Is it still available?  Please say it is!  I'm Amy and I really need a place to stay...and I'm running out of options."

Amy's voice was soft and dripping with sweetness.  It was a bit more rushed at the moment because of her current housing situation, but it was usually quite childlike.  In her small figure, she looked up with her bright blue eyes and was hoping that Nadia could answer her prayers.

Nadia noticed a significant pause from the cute young girl before her, clearly prompted by her appearance, and her heart sank a little. Another who was driven away by her clothing? That would be disappointing in the extreme. Nadia was growing very eager to have some company again, and she certainly wouldn’t mind having a roommate like this young lady; she was a lot cuter than most of the potential lodgers that had come to call, and Nadia had hoped a cute young woman might be more understanding…

Fortunately, her fears proved unfounded. The moment didn’t stretch into awkwardness as the girl seemed to come to a conclusion and stretched out her hand, explaining how she needed a place to stay and was running out of options.

Another might have been offended at the subtle implication Amy was only here because no other alternative had presented itself, but Nadia was not. There wasn’t any malice in those bright blue eyes, or any insult, unintentional or not, in that soft, sweet voice. Nadia held Amy’s gaze for a moment, but in that time, she decided she liked the girl and wished to know her better. She gave Amy a small smile, before reaching out and shaking her hand. Amy might be surprised at the firm, assertive grip the oddly-dressed young woman had. Nadia was a picture of feminine elegance, but she was also apparently quite strong and very confident in herself based on her handshake!

“It is still available…I’m was beginning to despair of filling it up, but now here you are. I do hope we can help one another,” she said pleasantly, stepping back from the door. “Please, come in, I’d like you to see for yourself.”

The apartment was nicer than Amy might have realized when she first heard about it; it was big enough for two people to live in very comfortably, and while it wasn’t fully lived-in, Nadia had certainly gotten a good start on that! A living room was immediately visible off to the left, and Amy would see that Nadia had a TV, a couch that looked like the pillowy sort you could sink into like a warm, comfy cloud, and a rocking chair along with several large, elegant bookshelves. A little further down and to the right was Nadia’s kitchen, well-used and well-stocked but utterly spotless for the guest to see. There was a shared bathroom with a shower (similarly immaculate; Nadia must be a rather clean person!), and then two bedrooms at the very end on opposite sides of a hallway, one empty and the other with the door shut. Much of the furniture was a lot like Nadia…somewhat odd to the modern eye, but at the same time very elegant and feminine.

“Please, have a look around, and ask me any questions you might have. I’d like for you to be able to make yourself at home here if you decide to join me,” Nadia said, standing ready to show Amy around or answer any questions she might have had.

The longer the moment drove on, the more desperate Amy became.  Amy was also fearful that her appearance might drive her away from being considered a roommate.  Several places already questioned her age and whether she could even afford an apartment.  Amy did look very young and didn't have much money, but it was hurtful to be rejected even before she had one foot in the door.

With the strong gaze and even stronger grip on her hand, Amy began to wither in Nadia's presence.  She was not expecting such a delicate looking girl to have such strength as her small hand was practically squeezed in her grip.  Amy's touch was smooth and almost baby soft as it almost felt like milk.  Having a roommate meant that Amy would have to share with somebody else and that they would be on equal footing.  However, Nadia was quickly staking a claim that they would not be equal and that Amy would almost be renting from her.

"Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!  You have no idea what this means to me.  I had an apartment set up already, but somebody else took it from me and I have to vacate in less than a week.  I just moved here and I don't know about the town or anybody else..."

Amy's words came fast and furious as she let out everything that had been troubling her.  She could easily be a bundle of energy on her more better moments which rather matched her cuteness.  But, now was not the time as she was getting more frustrated by the moment.

Amy was quite impressed with the apartment.  She had little furniture as she only took the bare necessities she needed for college.  She was going to try and save up some money to buy other items, but Nadia seemed to have everything taken care of.  She didn't have a couch or television, so the Family Room was already well stocked.  She had some dishes for the kitchen, but Nadia had more than enough for her.  Walking into the bedroom, Amy was quite surprised at its size.  The closet almost seemed doubled from her previous place and there was plenty of room for all of her stuff.  In fact, Amy could be very happy just living in the single bedroom and not ever use the Family Room.

Amy was gone for a long while as she went over her bedroom and made sure that it was perfect.  Once everything was ready, it was time to talk to Nadia.  Walking out, she went to meet up with Nadia once more.  She was rather nervous as she instinctively bit her bottom lip and pushed her light blonde hair back behind her ear.  Having a roommate was going to make things a bit different than what she expected.  Granted, she could now afford to live in such a nice place, but she had never lived with a stranger before.  This was all so new to her and she was a little scared about the opportunity.

"I love it!  It's perfect!  It's close to campus and I believe that I can afford it.  I did wonder about how us being roommate's work out.  Would everything be divided in half?  I just moved here from several states away and I'm only a Freshman, so I've never done anything like this before."

Nadia watched Amy curiously, making sure she didn’t stare to make the already-nervous girl uncomfortable but studying her features as she listened to her words.

Nadia considered beauty to be a thing to strive for in life, and a very natural and sincere kind of beauty, in her opinion, was cuteness. And goodness, did this nervous young lady have that, and in abundance! It was a shame she was dressed so casually, Nadia thought to herself. With a little adjustment to her wardrobe, imagine how much clearer her natural cuteness would emerge…Nadia imagined it curiously. Not her style, certainly, but something pink, or a soft sunshine yellow…yes, she could see that clearly.

“Ah, I understand perfectly. I was new here once, too,” Nadia sighed, feeling sympathy for the younger girl’s situation. “This is a nice town. It has a friendly community. If you’d like, I could introduce you to some of my friends later on.” Oh, Annie would love her, Nadia thought to herself. Kim too, she imagined. They’d see what she saw, she was certain enough of that. And Amy did seem to be a sweet girl…the community would be glad to have her, if she was interested.

Nadia let Amy explore for a bit, but she felt a strong relief surge through her when Amy declared she loved it. Part of her had still been holding its breath in case Amy got too intimidated and decided to look somewhere else, but now she smiled at Amy.

“I’m very glad you like it. I would be very happy to have you living here with me…this space does get a little bit too lonely for just one person.” She admitted. She looked Amy over. It did not look like the girl had much money, and Nadia remembered her own days just starting college. “I was planning to work out an arrangement with whoever came to live with me. Are you employed at the moment, Amy?”

To be honest, Nadia could afford this place by herself; she was making good money at the moment, so a roommate was more for company than financial support. But still, she did feel it would send the wrong sort of message to just let a girl she had only just met move in with her. She was in a position that meant she could strike whatever sort of deal was most fair to her young roommate; she was sure they could work something out.

Friends?

Amy was a bit skeptical about hearing about Nadia's friends.  A thought began to grow in her mind as she wondered about the type of people that would hang out with Nadia.  She couldn't imagine a normal Sorority Girl or Fraternity Boy hanging out with somebody like her.  They'd just make fun of her because of her appearance and way she handled herself.

So, Amy jumped to conclusions that Nadia hung out with other people dressed like her.  In her mind, she slightly winced at being around other people like her.  It was one thing to have her as a roommate, but Amy couldn't imagine hanging out with a group of them or even calling Nadia a friend of hers.  No, Amy decided to just be roommates with her as she really couldn't see herself fitting in with her.

"Yeah, I was hoping I could discuss that with you..."

At the moment, Amy wanted to squeal as it seemed like a done deal.  The location was perfect and Nadia wanted her there as well.  Nothing could go wrong except the biggest deciding factor.  With a deep breath and a loudly beating heart, Amy had to come clean about her finances.

"I do not have a job.  I was going to wait and see how hard classes were before I went looking.  I don't have much money and I only get a little from my allowance, so I'm a little strapped for cash.  So, is there a way that I can stay but at a lower rate?  I promise to help out and be the best roommate possible..."

Amy's final words ran out of her mouth as her excitement got the best of her.  She really wanted to move in here and wished that Nadia would give her the green light.  Maybe they could work out a deal where Amy could do many of the chores to make up for her part of the bargain.  She could easily clean the place or even do dishes, something that would allow her to stay here.

"Please, can I be your roommate?  You have to help me.  You are my only hope!"

Amy looked up to the taller woman with her pleading blue eyes and her hands praying for that salvation.  This was her best opportunity and she was not going to let it slip through her hands.  Amy swore to herself that she would do almost anything to get this apartment!

Thankfully, Nadia did not consider employment a deal-breaker; indeed, seeing the girl did not have an income made Nadia feel responsible for her safety. This girl NEEDED a place to stay. It was Nadia’s moral responsibility to see to it she had the shelter she required, and that no one took advantage of her!

Nadia took Amy’s hand, her touch more gentle than the assertively firm handshake she’d given before. She thought only a second before giving Amy a smile; intimidating as Nadia could be at times, she was really quite beautiful when she smiled.

“Don’t worry about the finances for now, Amy. I have paid up for this place myself for the next few months, since my search for a roommate was going nowhere. You can live here with me while you attend classes and look for a job. All I ask is that you help me with the chores and be a good roommate, and you are welcome here,” she said quietly, trying to reassure the girl her hopes had been answered! “When you have a more stable financial arrangement, we can talk about the rent again.”

It was insanely generous, but Nadia was not strapped for cash to pay for this place herself, and this seemed the arrangement most fair to Amy. Nadia could see there was no guile in the girl at all, and so she spoke with absolute confidence Amy would never try to take advantage of her.

Amy jumped a bit when Nadia took her hand as she was expecting the firm touch from before.  Amy expected to be thrown out of the apartment and told to find somewhere else to live.  It had happened so many times in the past, so why would today be any different?

When Nadia told her the good news, Amy wanted to cry.  She almost did actually, but her excitement overwhelmed her tears.  A loud squeal of delight came racing out of her lips as she bounced in place.  Her energy was overflowing as she spoke a mile a minute.

"Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!  I promise to be the best roommate in the whole wide world!  You can count on me!  Let me go get my stuff!"

Amy quickly turned the handshake into a tight hug as the young girl was too overjoyed with words.  She held it for a few moments before she almost skipped out of the apartment and went back to her place.

Because of her situation, Amy was more than ready to move as all of her things were wrapped up in boxes.  She got a moving company to move all of her heavy stuff.  She didn't have a ton of things, so moving day was quite easy.

It was very early in the evening when everything had been moved from one apartment to the other.  Amy had signed the lease and set up all the paperwork making her the official roommate of Nadia.  The moving company moved many of her larger items and she was able to get everything else.

Every box was clearly label and ready to be moved.  However, one box that was quickly thrown in the back of her closet and out of sight by anybody was not labeled and taped over several times.  With her bed set up and her furniture all in the right place, Amy now had the arduous task of putting everything back in its right position.  She was quite tired from the day and hoped to relax in her new apartment at any moment.

Nadia just laughed lightly at Amy’s unabashed delight; the girl was so refreshingly sincere! She did remind Nadia a bit of how Kim got when she was excited. Maybe she should introduce Amy to her friends sometime…but only if Amy was interested, she reminded herself. While Nadia loved her style and the community that had formed around it here, she did understand her way of life was not for everyone.

She returned Amy’s hug just as tightly, holding the girl close for a few moments; Nadia was a tad stoic, but she was just as excited as Amy to finally have someone to live with, and the feeling was communicated through the brief hug loud and clear.

The first week of cohabitation seemed to go very well, from what Nadia could observe. The apartment seemed far less big and lonely with someone there to share it, even though a little lady like Amy and her modest belongings didn’t actually take up that much space. It was simply…a presence, Nadia felt. Just knowing someone else was here helped dispel the loneliness of the apartment when it had just been her, and Nadia was delighted to find Amy remained delightfully cute even as she started to get used to having the younger girl around.

They were still adjusting to each other, and so Nadia did not get discouraged at the little snarls still to be worked out. She still intimidated Amy a little, she could tell, and without the desperation of finding a place to stay hanging over her, Nadia suspected there was less cause for Amy to overlook any oddities she found in Nadia’s dress or behavior. Still, Nadia was as nice as she could be to her young new roommate, and Amy was a very easy young lady to get along with in her turn. Even so…they were sharing a space, inhabiting it peacefully…but a distance remained between them. Perhaps that was to be expected, as they moved in very different circles, but as the weekend approached, Nadia decided as the older of the two it was her responsibility to make an attempt to bridge the gap.

“Amy?” She asked one evening, as the two put away the dishes together. “I know your classes are getting started, but the weekend will be coming up very soon now. I’m going to be going out to meet with some of my friends this Saturday. It’s not a formal event or anything, just a little get-together. You could come along with me, if you’d like.”

Nadia didn’t have high expectations Amy would show much interest in coming to meet her friends, but she felt she ought to at least let Amy know the door was open if the girl ever wanted to move into the same circles as Nadia. Nadia hadn’t known Amy very long, but she got the impression the girl didn’t meet new people easily, and Nadia knew a number of people she was sure would be happy to meet Amy…

The first week of classes is always a stressful time for students and Amy was no exception.  In fact, it seemed like it was doubly stressful for the small girl.  It always seemed like she had to work extra hard just to pull rather average grades.  And with it being her first semester in college, Amy had promised herself not to fall behind and lax in her studies.

So, Amy was not around for most of the week as she spent a large time down at the library or the computer lab.  And when she did come back to the apartment, she would go straight into her room and shut the door behind her.  It wasn't like Amy was rejecting Nadia, but Amy was just so busy.

Amy was quite cordial to her new roommate as she would greet her whenever she saw her, but that was the extent of their relationship.  Even though Nadia was the only person in this entire town that knew she existed, Amy shut her out and refused to go down that path.

The truth of the matter was that Amy was a bit put off by Nadia.  When Amy first met, Nadia being a Lolita did not bother her at all.  However, seeing Nadia be a Lolita every single day worried Amy.  Amy already had no other friends, so she could not jeopardize any chance she had by being seen with Nadia.  Also, her calm and distant personality had made Amy quite wary of her.  Amy didn't know what she was thinking about anything and she was afraid of offending her and being kicked out, so Amy decided that it was best just to avoid the situation altogether.

Despite all of their differences, Amy did keep up her end of the bargain.  She always kept her room neat and tidy.  She cleaned the apartment usually when Nadia was not there and she made sure to clean her dishes.  That is when she got caught by Nadia.  Amy looked up to the Lolita girl and tried to think of something to say.  It pained her a bit, but Amy had to lie to Nadia's face.

"Saturday?  Oh, I don't think I can make it.  I have a lot of studying to do and...I think there is a party at one of the Sorority Houses that I wanted to go to.  I'm really sorry..."

Amy never looked Nadia directly in the face and she quickly scampered out of the kitchen once her dishes were clean.  Of course, Amy wasn't going to do any studying on Saturday night and she had no chance of ever attending a Sorority Party.  No, with Nadia finally out of the house for an extended period of time, Amy was finally going to enjoy her secret box that was buried at the bottom of her closet.

Nadia’s face fell a bit when Amy turned down her invitation, although Amy likely didn’t notice from not looking her directly in the face.

“Oh…it’s all right. I just thought you might like to come, that’s all. I know it can be hard to meet people when you’re getting started at a new place…but it sounds like you have things under control,” she said, keeping her voice pleasant to hide her disappointment.

Nadia was quiet after Amy quickly left the kitchen; she really had wanted a chance to introduce her cute new roommate to her friends, and she had hoped that Amy would like to spend some time with her. She’d been a cordial roommate, but there was always a distance that made Nadia feel she was not welcome in Amy’s world beyond their shared living space. Nadia was used to people rejecting her for her fashion sense, and it had stopped bothering her some time ago, but she couldn’t forget the potential she’d seen in Amy…it seemed a shame Amy did not have any interest in her world at all. Nadia was sharp enough she’d noticed right away Amy had lied to her face to get out of the invitation, but she was far too nice to call Amy out and embarrass her. She’d accept the rejection for what it was, and leave Amy to her own devices.

Saturday came all too quickly, and Nadia was soon headed out the door, by herself. She was dressed particularly nicely today, wearing a pure black dress with a lot of bows and frills, along with thigh-high white stockings and black mary-janes, along with a pretty lacy black bonnet.

“I’m probably not going to be back until late tonight, Amy. I’ll be having dinner with my friends, so don’t wait for me as far as dinner goes. I hope you have a good day!” She said, quite sincerely meaning it as she smiled at her roommate before slipping out to do…well, whatever it was Nadia did when Amy wasn’t around.
