After having some school trouble this year, I'm considering enlisting in the military to repay whatever student loans I might have down the road. I was wondering, can transgender girls sign up if they've transitioned, had surgery and had birth certificate changed? I'm still not sure of transitioning, but I don't want to have to wait in the military to do so. Right now I'm just asking if anyone in the service (I'm sure there's a few) knows the answer.

This assumes you are American.

My understanding is that while "Don't Ask Don't Tell" has been lifted and gays can join the military, the language is such that TGs still can not join. The Department of Defense bases this on their medical policy, which defines a TG as one who has Gender Identity Disorder. Such are deemed unfit for military service.

This is also a doubled edged sword. Say you decide to fight this and try to get GID redefined, or try to get yourself declared NOT GID. Now you can't transition, because in order to do so, one must have GID.

Afraid you're between a rock and a hard place on this one.

So would that mean I couldn't sign up as a female, for the sake of argument even after I had transitioned, gotten a vagina and had north Dakota (my birth state) recognize that I'm a female, would I be unable to sign up? I understand that this is different from don't ask, but if ur labeled a female by a state, that wouldn't bypass the problem? I don't know why am asking, I couldn't afford to transition before enlisting anyway.

To be honest, I'm not sure how they would even know ... I mean, do they really research everyone that deeply? But yes, I do know that they SAY that even a transitioned TG is not permitted in the military service.

I was in the Army for almost like 9 yrs and never head of anyone doing any M/F trans I dont think they will let you but hey you never know this is the new age lol. HOWEVER being a Sissy most of my Army time I can say theres alot of that in the Army atm lol. GL with yer option I can say I did like the Army and would of gone full time if I didnt have that problem in Iraq. If you got any questions by all means PM me. BIG HUGS!!!

If yer female at the time by all means yer a female nothing they can do about that lol as far as doing it in the service I realy dont think so. They dont want that issue yet in the service and they are getting over that gays are in the service lol.

i'd be willing to bet money that you can't. DADT is slowly grinding through the military. unlike being gay/lesbian where concealing your sexual orentation is rather easily. hiding your gender is a lot more difficult.
