PG Internet Security
Can this possibly be true? Anyone know a lot about internet security?

I used my new computer for one year with Windows Defender as my internet security. It did absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. Never got the first message or file quarantined.

I installed McAfee just 48 hours ago and found this report. Potentially malicious incoming connections blocked: 2,409. Wow! Have I been targeted or are they trying to impress me with their software?

I like McAfee it is very complex in its settings and functions. I have had every scan done so far stick on 98% and it would never finish. Had to shut down to get it off my screen and stop the scan.

A full scan of about a half million files revealed Zero viruses and Malware, but it stuck on 98%. Should I uninstall and download again? I don't wish to purchase it again!

I would say that McAfee is lying. In my experience it and the likes of Norton are worse than some of the viruses they are meant to remove. Bloated slow software that cripple your PCs performance and are in some cases pretty much impossible to uninstall should you want to change.

Windows Defender by the way unless you're using Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 is only an anti-spyware program not anti-virus. Personally I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you're not using any of those. I've been using it on Windows 7 installs since 7 came out and never had a single virus.

I have Windows 8.1 and noticed the change in Windows Defender to include Anti Virus protection. I agree they are BS ing me with the blocked incoming connections. The actual dangerous threats are Zero.

I also had your experience that the bloated internet protection slowed my computer so bad I had to get rid of McAfee once before. I also had a problem uninstalling it.

I previously used Security Essentials and was happy with it and it was free. Maybe my download is not so bad after all because so far it is not slowing down my computer. I have a full year of protection left.

Thank you, Baby Butch : )

I wish you lived closer to me Baby Butch as there is where I live, just only down the road away from my apartment, a computer shop and the guy who works there is very friendly does not charge to high of a price for repairs, I nearly almost thought about offering you to send your computer out to me.

So that I could get him to fix it for less than what others have tried to get out of you, but it would mostly likely cost you a lot of money, just to send your compter over to me, just so that I can get it fixed on your behalf.

I do recall my room mate once having McAfee, and did find it troublesome to use, when trying to uninstal the program, the program would not uninstal, he had to use a program called Windows Unlocker, since then he discovered a better program called IOrbit, it is freeware download program and can unistall most programs, and just in case where that should fail, that is where the Windows Unlocker comes in handy.

And I feel it is a real bad thing that a security sotware once installed to be designed to not unistall, forcing a user to then have no coice but to use that security prgaram is wrong and darn unfair. AVG while in the past has had it's problems, over the years they have actually managed to improve their security software and that is also free to use and download.

I hope this helps?

Love, hugs & kisses

Sure PetBabyAmy both yours and Baby Bethany's replies are helpful. It seems all 3 of us had similar experiences with Internet security.

No worries my computer was fixed by me and I paid no one that tried to Scam me a dime. I ended up with McAfee free for a year based on my original purchase a year ago.

I did not use it due to slowing my computer. I think it sucks the way they make things to not uninstall. I will manage to get rid of it if I have too.

Then I will go back to Windows Defenders newer version. I can also get a free download of Security Essentials as recommended.

Thank you, Baby Butch : )

Update: I just looked into the McAfee control panel. I located a report with every one of the potential threatening incoming connections. I found many sources including my own computer.

The list is huge but the attempts have slowed down a lot. I have WI- FI and am wondering if a hard wired Ethernet connection would be safer. Will have to find out more about this.

I did learn I had to accept my own network as Trusted.

The new number is: 2466 / Up by 57 in an hour and a half.

An ethernet connection would be more secure however ultimately you're still connecting to the internet which is where the vast majority of threats will come from.

Ultimately if someone is very determined to access your PC as long as you're connected to the internet or other communication systems (bluetooth etc) they will probably be able to do so. For general internet use, a decent anti-virus/spyware program and a firewall should be all you ever need. Oh and not visiting dodgy sites either. Download/torrent sites and pornography sites tend to be absolutely riddled with viruses and spyware. Basically just use common sense.

I wouldn't mind betting that most of those potentially threatening incoming connections are things like auto updaters for software (I did see Norton once try to take down it's own update program!), skype and similar programs or simply cookies for various websites.

@ Baby-Bethany

I see that and guess it would not make much difference. I was just wondering how many may be trying to pick up on my WI FI signal to get free internet. That would require knowing my security key and I doubt the signal travels far from my apartment.

I will avoid the troublesome sites and keep my McAfee up to date. After finding my own network in my McAfee control panel I accepted it as trusted. I also read thru many of the settings and learned  more. I will use McAfee since it was paid for a year ago. (included with computer)

I did get the Scans to complete without getting stuck. I think you are right about those blocked connections being various things like updates, etc. I will stop worrying unless something actually goes wrong. The blocked connections are much less but still happening.

The number is up to 2629, it did go up by 30 after logging into Sissy Kiss. Appreciate the responses. Have a babyish day! : )
