THE TRAIN RIDE
Peter Harris was a 16 year old boy of average height and he
was of slim build, he had long read messy hair, it was hardly ever brushed, he wore glasses, but only for reading, watching TV, or using his computer monitor and keyboard, other than that, he did not need to wear his glasses for any other reason, but he only wore them all the time, because he cud then take them off re do his hair and look completely different, learning that there was some truth that some one can quite look completely different without glasses on.
He had often used that to his advantage, for all of the wrong reasons of course. He was a misfit and the worst kind at that, he had blue eyes, an attitude to life that was pretty much typical of most 16 year old boys, he was rude, mean, impolite, all of the qualities of most boys his age.
And he would do anything to cheat his way through life, for example, right now he had gotten onto a train from a train stop, not a station.
As going to a train station meant having to buy a train ticket, Peter was the type of 16 year old boy that did not want to pay for anything, if he can steal anything and get away with it, he would, and he was good at stealing stuff, this was in the days way before CCTV and other security devices used in today's modern world. Peter was a boy that lived in the early 80's, it was 1982 to be precise.
Security devices in shops were not quite as good as they are now and not every high street store had them in the early 80's and where stores had those devices, Peter kept clear of, or tried sometimes way to trick the system. Which was tempting his luck or fate with you will, because there was always a chance of getting caught and the same can be said for what he was doing now getting on a train at a train stop and going to the toilet when the ticket conductor came for those who had tickets or who wanted to buy a ticket.
Peter knew exactly which type of trains had on-board toilets, certain trains did not have them, not local ones for local trips, though there was plans to put on-board toilet facilities into every train. As there had been a few cases of those trains that did not have them where people have wet themselves, or worse because there was no on-board toilet facility to use.
Peter had been able to successfully get on the right kind of train, hide in the on-board toilet and get off always at a stop before a main train station, as he knew at nearly most train stations there was ticket inspections.
People being stopped by station patrol to check passengers leaving the train station had bought their tickets, the transportation authorities of the Railway Sector were trying to cut down on this kind of crime, people getting free rides on trains.
Checking the toilets was not always a productive solution, though it was known that was the place some of these Joy Riders were using to hide in order to get away from ticket conductors.
But a few people have been apprehended who have actually had tickets with them or had some sort of train pass and that lead to serious complaints to the Railway Authorities.
So checks on the on-board toilet facilities was something done but with some caution and not done too often to avoid further complaints.
Though it got complaints by some people not liking being stopped and asked to see their ticket or train pass after or sometimes before entering the toilet facilities on the trains
So these checks had to be stopped all together, it was not really getting the results the Railway Authorities had hoped for, so they began a new incentive, for people to report anyone they thought looked suspicious enough to the train conductor immediately and if the person was found to be a Joy Rider, the person that reported it would be given some sort of a reward.
But there was a clause to that reward, it made it quite clear that only and when a person was found actually being guilty of the crime and had not...
A: Had A Ticket... B: Refuse To Pay For A Ticket Once Caught and... C: The Person Did Have A Train Pass. Only then if these matters were evident would the reward be paid, if a person caught did offer to pay, he or she would get a caution, the person who reported the crime would just get a thank you for their efforts.
Not an inspiring reward to say the least, of course a back up plan was needed if this plan failed to work to put a stop to these people getting free train rides. Peter had gotten onto the right sort of train and made his way to the on-board toilet facility of the train as soon as he saw the ticket conductor making his way down the Isle of seats on either side.
He made a quick change in clothes, which was not easy to do as there was not that much space in the toilet section of the train.
He removed his glasses and went to sit at a different seat, no one had recognized him and wandered where the other guy had gone to, but figured he must have made a quick exit, so reporting him was a bit pointless and he could be off anywhere by now, so... no one said anything to the ticket conductor on the train.
Peter had tempted fate far too many times, others have tried to tell him not to tempt fate.
But he never listed, Peter did not believe in the whole fate thing anyway and since he had gotten away with with so much, that only made his belief, that much more stronger.
There was a beautiful girl sat a few seats away from him that he was drooling over, he wanted to chat her up, but that was something he was not good at, chatting up girls that is.
Besides, he did not like girls too much, always thought that they were silly with all the girlie stuff they get up to and do.
Right now however, this particular girl had long blond hair, even from a seated position he could her slender figure, wearing a pretty blue floral dress, not pink as Peter though a girl would wear.
Peter was sat at such a position that he could catch sight of the girl sat a few seats away from him.
He was perched on top of the head rest of the seat, not on the actual seat part of the whole seat itself, giving Peter a very good view of the girl that had caught his attention, everyone thought he was being a typical teenager by not sitting down right, so it was not worth reporting the mater.
Peter had on the seat next to him a good medium sized blue back pack. Eventually Peter did sit down properly, much to the relief of the other passengers who saw the way he was sat, shaking their heads to indicate their disapproval.
Anyway after a few train stops before the ticket conductor would come by to check for tickets again, Peter knew exactly how far he could go on the train before the train would come to a certain stop where the ticket conductor would need to check on people for tickets, apart from those who had already paid for their tickets, which requires a good memory of faces to know who has paid, who has shown a ticket or a train pass.
Anyway... Peter saw the girl get off, at the next stop, and he got up to follow her, he walked past the area she had sat at, it had a table, to Peter's surprise, there was left on the table a Sony Cassette Walk-man, it had a 3 band graphic equalizer to it too.
It looked brand new and it was in the color of red. Peter being a typical boy was surprised because he though if anything that the walk-man would be a typical girlie color, like pink.
Anyway, without hesitation, he picked up the walk-man, there was something else left on the table, a small cassette case, with a selection of tapes inside of it.
'What a lucky find.' Peter thought, he got off the train and had completely forgotten about the girl he had fallen in love with.
His mind now was on the walk-man he now had in his possession, he was suddenly startled by a voice that had spoken to him.
